Liquidation Clusters and Stop Hunts, Explained

Forced closes aren't like ordinary trades. Understanding why makes some of the sharpest, fastest moves in crypto futures far less mysterious.

Why a forced close is different

A voluntary trade happens because someone decided, at that moment, that the price was acceptable. A liquidation happens because a leveraged position hit its maintenance margin threshold and the exchange closed it automatically — regardless of whether the holder wanted out at that price.

That involuntary element matters. Liquidations add real, forced volume to the market in one direction, often within seconds, with no consideration for getting a good price — which is exactly why they can move price further and faster than the same-sized voluntary trade would.

How a cluster forms

A single liquidation rarely moves a liquid market much. A cluster — many leveraged positions with liquidation prices bunched near the same level — is what matters. When price reaches that zone, one position's forced close can push price just far enough to trigger the next one, and the next, in a short cascading chain.

Clusters tend to concentrate near round numbers, recent swing highs and lows, and heavily-traded levels — exactly where traders commonly set stops and where high-leverage entries cluster their liquidation prices.

What a "stop hunt" actually is

The term gets thrown around loosely, but the mechanism is simple: price is pushed (or drifts) just past an obvious level where many stop-losses and liquidation prices are known to sit, triggering a burst of forced selling or buying — and then, once that fuel is exhausted, price frequently reverses back the other way.

This isn't always a deliberate conspiracy by a single actor — sometimes it's simply where the resting orders happened to be. Either way, the price behavior around these zones is what matters for reading it, not assigning intent.

Reading clusters in practice

Real-time liquidation feeds (available from most major exchanges) let you see forced closes as they happen, tagged with price and size. Watching where these events concentrate — and, just as importantly, watching whether price reverses once a cluster clears — is more useful than trying to predict a cluster before it happens.

A cluster that clears (the crowded liquidations get flushed out) and price snaps back is a very different situation from a cluster that keeps building without resolution — the second often means the move still has fuel left.
